Deep Linking
The search engines are looking for a natural pattern of linking across the web which would include links to your home page and to your inner pages. The engines want to see that your site provides valuable information accross it's pages, which is understandable. Naturally then, other sites will eventually find this information, see it's value and link to it. Note - link to it, not to the front page, but directly to the content. When Google and the others see this - they can be fairly sure that the site is good and that the link is not artificial.

If thet're unwilling or still don't get it - run, preferably into our arms, but if not, then somewhere else that is on the cutting edge of search engine optimisation techniques. Deep linking is difficult to come by, it generally happens over time, naturally. So if there's any way to do it without waiting for benevolent owners of other sites, it's good to grasp it.
When getting links to auxiliary pages on your site, keep in mind the same principles of site optimisation - get great anchor text that is appropriate to the page linked to, related to the theme of the home page. When the bots come across links like this, their little eyes light up and benevolent messages are sent across the web back to their master ships in Mountain View, California or Redmond in Washington State. A deep link is a valuable facet of good search engine optimisation.
In summary, If you can demonstrate that sites have linked to auxiliary pages as well as your home page, then you have extra SE respect. And it's obvious where that leads... the bank!
